Bulk herb, elderberries

We sell dried elderberries in our bulk herbs & spices section here at Ideal Green Market.
Elderberries are known as one of the top antiviral herbs on the planet. Also very high in antioxidant power, elderberry is higher in flavonoids than blueberries, cranberries, goji berries and blackberries.  Even though it's later in the flu & cold season, we thought we'd share this recipe with you from Megan for making elderberry syrup that can be taken when you feel the on-set of the flu or a cold:

ELDERBERRY SYRUP
2/3 cup dried elderberries
3 inch stick of cinnamon
1/2 tsp whole cloves
1- 2 inch knob fresh ginger, cubed
3 1/2 cups water

1 cup of raw honey

Simmer first five ingredients for 1 hour, covered. Cool and then strain liquid. Mix in raw honey after cooling to preserve all the wonderful benefits of the raw honey. Pour into a quart jar and store in the fridge.

USES:  Elderberry is used for “the flu” (influenza), H1N1 "swine" flu, HIV/AIDS, and boosting the immune system. It is also used for sinus pain, back and leg pain (sciatica), nerve pain (neuralgia), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) .  There is no standard dose of elderberry. For flu, some studies have used 1 tablespoon of an elderberry syrup extract four times a day. Another common form of elderberry is a lozenge, often with zinc, that is taken numerous times daily after a cold begins. Ask your health care provider for advice.
