Ideal Green Market Co-op Grand Opening & Farmers Market

The Ideal Green Market Co-op, a member-owned and governed food co-op and organic. local-foods grocery store is open to all, and hosts their Grand Opening May 14-21, during fishing opener week, Saturday-Saturday.  It’ll be a week of fun, excitement, celebration and community as they focus on local foods and launch into full operations.

Activities include: lunch offerings and music on each Saturday featuring Emily Hammer May 14 and Lee “Bone” Sherseth May 21; local vendor demonstrations and food sampling; specials during the week on product; a master gardener on some days to answer questions; free re-useable shopping bag to the first 50 shoppers on Saturday May 14 and again on Saturday, May 21; drawing prizes of two large gift baskets filled with co-op goods – one basket is for members that includes a $100 gift certificate and one is for potential members which includes a $100 member-owner share.

Lunch menu on May 14 will include a pocket sandwich featuring Ferndale Market’s (Canon Falls, MN) smoked turkey and Geoff’s Chop salad mix, a unique mix offered each week in the co-op thanks to Geoff Davidge, Board member and head of produce oversight.  “I started making up this mix for fun, and people really loved the ease of purchasing a salad mix,” said Davidge.   He also periodically makes a root chop that can be used in soup, stew or simply roasted. He said, “I enjoy working with good, fresh food and sharing that with others.”  Salad Girl Dressings of Minneapolis will be available to top off the pocket sandwich which can also be vegetarian.  May 21 lunch will feature grilled Fox Farm Pork wild rice-mushroom brats or regular brats, turkey wieners or vegetarian option, served on a freshly made Positively Third Street Market (Duluth) bun.

“It is the goal of Grand Opening to have a festive feel and celebrate local, sustainable, healthy food and products, and community” said Barb Mann, co-op coordinator. “Together we’ve accomplished great things in the community and it can only grow further under the direction of our new General Manager, Brenda Myers.”

Toward that effort of fun, in addition to activities already noted, Red Lake Nation Foods on Tuesday, May 17, will sample their jams and jellies made with wild harvested berries.  Wednesday, May 18 Alder Song Farm of Merrifield and Bourn of Nature of Pequot Lakes will be featured vendors.  Thursday, May 19 will feature Stone House Coffee of Nisswa, who will host sampling a few unique roasts for customers to taste and vote for their favorite as an Ideal Green Market Roast.  In the afternoon that day, sampling of Alden’s Ice Cream on mini-cones will be offered.  Friday, May 20 will feature Miracle of Joy Tooth Crystals of Crosslake, Cha Cha Chaga of Pillager and Smude Sunflower Oil and Kowalzek’s Honey of Pierz.  There’s more in the works and you can visit for a full schedule and details.

The Farmers’ Market hosted last summer in the parking lot will resume this season starting Saturday, May 21, 9am-1pm as part of the final Grand Opening Week Activities.  Local food vendors for the market are still welcome and should call Barb Mann, Co-op Coordinator at 218-838-6058 or download a Vendor Application form.

Sponsors of the Grand Opening include: B & B Farm Co of Pequot Lakes; Hunt Utilities Group & Happy Dancing Turtle of Pine River; Jason Baca Beef of Pequot Lakes; Justin, Clasen & Co Ltd of Pequot Lakes; Pequot Lakes Sanitation; and Rising Rock Orchard of Longville.
