Food & Silent Auction Fundraiser

The Ideal Green Market Cooperative has launched its Member-Owner Campaign and is hosting a food and silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, April 18, 11:30am-3pm in partnership with the Old Milwaukee Saloon & Eatery located next door to the Ideal Co-op.  Attendees will receive a sample gourmet plate featuring appetizers, soups, entrée and dessert.  A silent auction includes, and is not limited to: artwork of local artists; gift certificates for massage and other products and services; locally made twig furniture; food gift baskets; a radio controlled 2ft. boat; antique items; and more!

The recent Member Campaign Kick-Off community meeting hosted approximately 60 people of which 25% were already member-owners and another 25% joined that evening.  There are currently 44 member-owners committed to realizing the vision of a viable, sustainable food cooperative in Ideal Corners.  They intend to feature local goods from local growers and food producers that fit the criteria of non-gmo, natural, organic goods.

The incorporating board of directors, consisting of eight members, with the guidance of the Co-op Coordinator, Barb Mann, are making progress to providing access to local, sustainable, and healthy food and products, their mission.  A farmers’ market will be hosted at the store site on Saturdays, 9am-1pm starting May 16 and running through September, and into October, weather permitting.  This will allow people to access the local food and goods they desire, develop relationships with local vendors who will eventually serve as wholesale vendors for the co-op inventory, making goods more readily accessible year-round.

As the nitty-gritty work continues, it becomes clear what is needed to realize the vision and establish a food co-op.  The member-owner goal of 80 by May 1, and 250 needed to open the doors, is gradually being fulfilled.  Minimum funds needed to launch the retail member-owned, member-governed cooperative range between $50,000-65,000.  Grants are being sought, fundraisers are scheduled, and appeals to local civic groups and organizations are in initial stages of implementation.  It’s about working together to create a food system. “We believe this co-op will become a reality in Ideal Corners,” said Board President Dan Kayser of Stone Woman Herbals in Pine River.  He continued, “It’s just a matter of time as we raise the capital equity needed to open the doors.”

Treasurer John Plein said, “We know some residents are waiting to join, to see if the co-op will be successful and actually open its doors.  We need people to join with us and take a chance, and together make this happen for our community.”

Cooperative development is a risk at this stage. The challenge now, becomes gaining the strong community support necessary to open the doors.  Help us make a commitment to build a viable food system that supports the cycle of healthy soil and environment, creating healthy food production, to fill the need for healthy food with a small environmental footprint and creating systems that support that vision.

There are many ways to be involved. Become a member-owner, share your talents on one of the task groups (finance, promotion, membership, product development, retail set up), participate in the monthly Azure Buyers' Club,  "like" us on Facebook and share your ideas, tell your family and friends and encourage them to join, participate in a fund-raiser event, host a presentation about the Ideal Green Market Cooperative.  It all makes a difference.
